Utility Engineer/Designer

Kapur is looking for a Gas Utility Engineer/Designer with 1-5 years of experience. The position is based in Madison, Wisconsin working in either the Kapur or MGE office. The position is responsible for designing and developing construction plans for gas service systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Create detailed drawings for gas main and service installations using design software.
  • Design and update comprehensive base drawings, piping plans, and bills of materials.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Review and check designs for adherence to standards and regulations.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines including right of way permitting, environmental, and project engineers/managers as well as homeowners and customers.
  • Produce construction prints.
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data, survey/site plans, and customer requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or certificate in CAD, Drafting, or Design from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience is required. Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • 1-5 years of experience in gas service or distribution design is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of natural gas systems principles, practices, and methods of operation.
  • Understanding of pipes, meters, regulators, and materials common to natural gas distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with public works design standards, materials, and construction is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work on and manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and cost analysis for gas load and project estimation.
  • Civil (road construction and improvement experience) experience a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn from others and mentor other staff.

This role requires a combination of technical expertise, design skills, and project management abilities to ensure the efficient and safe development of natural gas distribution systems.
